Did you know that the type of drinking water supply in a city or municipality can make a big difference in the CO2 balance? Various factors, such as the production and recycling of bottles, transportation and the energy consumption of the respective production and delivery processes, significantly influence the carbon dioxide emissions of the drinking water supply.
Drinking water should taste good and be easily accessible — as required by the new Water Resources Act in Germany and the European Union. But the environment should also be polluted even less in the future. Environmental factors should therefore also be taken into account when deciding on the type of drinking water supply.
CO2 emissions analysis:
In a study by the Technical University of Darmstadt, the CO₂ emissions of three different types of drinking water supply were calculated. Gallon systems and bottled water dispensers were compared with a water dispenser with a fixed water connection. This was based on a per capita consumption of 1.5 liters of chilled, still water per day by 30 employees.
The graph shows that the water dispenser with fixed water connection saves more than 1.6 tons of CO₂ emissions compared to water bottles from vending machines. According to the study, the CO₂ emissions of a solid water dispenser also correspond to only around 16.4 percent of the CO₂ emissions of a gallon water system.
